A few months ago I was approached by Ukrainrian literature experimentalist, Alex Sashi Shagi, about entering some work into his Fantaisie Impromptu Project, which is also his first novel.

The project itself is quite imaginative and beautiful. I immediately felt it to be right up my alley with what I am trying to accomplish with my current body of work. (See "The Sycamore House") I don't dare to try explain Sashi's idea, so here is a little info from his blog and a link to the Lost at E Minor's cover article on his project: The book is due out later this year!

Well. I guess it is the time to tell you what's the Fantaisie-Impromptu is and what it is about. It is the first novel written by me, 23 years old Ukrainian guy on the name Sasha Shagi. I've no idea who is responsible for my thoughts; I guess I should, because it is what I've made for the last 6 months. What I lived for and what I'm proud of.

The story is pretty simple. There is one guy, sitting on the porch in warm chilly autumn park. He starts to remember his childhood, his strict Mom, his plays with insects in the garden of his neighbors, his great skills of playing the piano. He remembers how he slacked his piano lessons but he had a great talent and even won big competition. So now, he is sitting in the park and thinking-remembering: "Damn, I could be a great pianist. I was a good player when i was young". He really regrets. Suddenly he starts to imagine 4 different scenarios of being him a pianist. If I were a pianist, what it would look like?

Ok – let him be The King Of The Keys. That's his name.

You See Scenario Number One. You Live In NYC And Play The Piano In Some West Village Restaurant. You Are Alone There. Your Apartment Is Dark.

Scenario Number Two. It Is Very Different Life From That You Had Before. You Are Not Really You. You Are 19 Here, And There – 35. You Live In Miami

Scenario Number Three. Paris, Strangers, Cats And You Are Like An Electronic Composer For Fashion Shows In Paris, London, New York.

Scenario Number Four. You Are In Kiev. You Are Going By Metro And Collecting Different Stories And Artistic Images From The People Around You. People Are Different, Like In This Song: People are just people/They shouldn't make you nervous/The world is everlasting/It's coming and it's going/If you don't toss your plastic/The streets won't be so plastic/And if you kiss somebody/Then both of you'll get practice /The world is everlasting…

Four different cities. New York, Miami, Paris, Kiev. And that's it. Some conclusions. Some understanding. There is in every story – different sparrows and different keys. Sparrow is the symbol of your life objectives.

This project is totally impromptu. For me as a writer and for all artists that are aimed to take part in it. Besides that, I made an experiment in choosing the characters for my novel. During some time I could not find the right personage for the third part of my Fantaisie. That's why I decided to find it by Internet. It was a guy T.T., he lived in Paris. He was making the tracks for fashion shows. I've started to "rewrite" his look, habbits, his eyes and all stuff in his apartment and his work. We were chatting, talking, I was sending him the huge amount questions and almost every morning I had his answer in my e-mail box. Then I had a trip to Paris where I met my character in real life and where my Fantasie Impromptu was done. As a novel. And as a good life experience.

2nd Fridays
2nd Fridays in Pilson Park Art District are awesome. I must say I enjoyed the more relaxed vibe going on there. very unformidable and unintimidating.

Friday I was thrilled to go see my friend/ co-worker, Roxanne McGovern and her husband, Michael McGovern show Legacy at the EXP Gallery in the Pilsen Chicago Art District. Their work is amazing. Both examine and research their own peticular histories, fading family memories, and abstract interpretations of those experiences. Not only through content, but by process as well. Their work affected me most out of what I saw all night. And I think it is due to their ability to explore work that is highly personal, but also highly relatable.
Its open and honest and provocative.

Perhaps thats what I am drawn to... In the work of the others, as well as in my own artistic explorations. Why not produce work that is "uncomfortably personal?" I don't know of any other way to work. It can be frightening at times to stick your neck out like that, and I really respect other artists who do it, and do it well.
surviving winter
I apologize for no updates in awhile. i keep writing things, and then deleting them.
But I have good news and bad news!
Lets start with the good news...

This past fall I started sewing again after about 10 years of giving my sewing machine the cold shoulder. And finally now, to keep my sanity during this winter that sucks the life out of my soul, I have made some pretty things that are worth sharing. and buying!

you can check them out at www.thenaivetree.etsy.com at the amazing online marketplace of etsy.com

i have also been painting and drawing a lot lately, and plan to hopefully photograph new stuff and have them posted within the next couple of weeks.

and for the bad news...
after all the preparation for the long application process and waiting to hear back, i unfortunately did NOT get into either m.f.a. graduate program i wanted. i am pretty bummed about it, but i refuse to get discouraged. Just gotta keep trying and figure out whats next. Perhaps I should've gone into accounting?
just kidding. i'd rather make stuff.

grand opening
Here it is! My very own website! Its been on my to-do list for the past decade...But thank god for Other Peoples Pixels, its finally come to being. I am still sorting and reorganizing things, and I am hoping by Christmas to have A LOT a lot more art up...more links and resume etcetera...

So keep checking back...
